Andy, Laura, Tom and farm-hand Andrew extend our greetings from Dunedin. We live on the crest of Three Mile Hill just out of Dunedin - a genuine 7 minutes from the City centre and only 20 minutes from Dunedin Airport.
'Us' also includes about 180 alpaca, 2 horses, 3 guanaco (ancestors of the alpaca and llama)n and 3 cats. We do have our favorites amongst our 'pacas - check our alpacas. Our herd is primarily solid white females, with a lucky supporting cast of stud male escorts, and twenty brown, fawn, black and grey girls. We all live together on our 17 acres, farming a toatl of 40 acres, and look west towards Flagstaff and south down the Taieri Valley.
As with all alpaca they are distinctive enough in their faces, frames and habits to be individually recognisable and named. I think we are too ... Andy's the one that's going (very) slowly bald! And we value knowing each of our alpaca ... the experience is about watching habits and trends amongst the herd, particularly in our breeding females, and the fascination in truely interacting with our alpaca as you might your domestic dog or cat.
The family: Andy - 'pacas all day (i.e. doesn't do much), and Tom and Laura squeeze in enormous social and sporting lives around school and 'paca duties. Andrew is on a one-year working visit from the UK and here to learn to manage alpacas - which he already does as the 'pacas seem to like him.
So if you are in Otago come visit us to meet our herd - we know nearly all their names and will happily show you why we are an alpaca family.
